Racist or sensible? You decide...
I called the Australian High Commission in Port Vila today to find out precisely why Ben's visa was refused and to find out if there's any other way that we might be able to get him out here in time for christmas. The results of the conversation were less than pleasing and have left me feeling very disillusioned with the Australian Government's immigration and tourist policies. But rather than getting on a full-on (somewhat biased) rant about the racist nature of Australia's policies I'll provide you guys with the info and you can make up your own minds.Ben's application was refused on the grounds that he has no incentive to return to his country of origin. When I asked today whether we had been too ambitious by applying for a two month visa I was told that the time limit had no bearing on the decision, rather the fact that he is in a relationship with an Australian citizen means that, according to the government's rules, he is not a "genuine tourist" and therefore would never have been considered for a tourist visa anyway. However, it took them a week of "application processing time" plus a AUS$75 dollar non-refundable processing fee to tell us that due to these rules the application wasn't worth the paper it was written on. Fancy taking an application fee from someone who barely earns that much in a week, in order to process an application that was never going to be granted anyway!!!
In short, Ben has no chance of getting into the country until we are married... and even then there's no guarantee that a spousal visa will be granted. I'm glad all our plans depend on me going there to live. I hate to imagine how he might be treated here.
Hmmm... the post was a little bit rant-y but not too bad considering...

oh yaeli, you so silly. They can't take make any money if they tell him he's going to get rejected b4 he applies. If they told him the truth then he wouldn't pay and thats hardly the way to run a good buisness.. ahem.. government is it?!? anywho, if you're gonna spew, spew in to this [_] .
I look forward to meeting your man one day.
Actually, if he got rejected on the grounds of not being a genuine tourist then couldn't you just break-up so that he could be here as a tourist and by complete conicidence meet the lass of his dreams? (psst, the lass is you). its an apt suggestion i tells ya. APT!
Krug has his nipples out!
P.S. Le Krug!!!: The pills are supposed to be taken sub-lingually... NOT sub-tittaly.
You know, I have read a few ozzie posts recently that make me wonder how Australia manages to mingle with the rest of the western world politicians sometimes! Although I'd still say you're better than America!
Wasn't Vauatu rcently discovered to be the happiest place in the world? Isn't that bit of an incentive to go back?
Stupid, ridiculous, and pointless policy!
Could he try for a visa just as a tourist & claim he has no relationship with you at all? Then his incentive to go back would be, umm, lifestyle, costs, quality of living, weather & having no reason to stay!
Is there a company that helps get things processed. I know there are a few for the USA, that give advice about what to say/not say.??
Here today via Michele's - Hiya!

Rashbre... There are migrations agents who are supposed to help you get paperwork lodged and give advice and stuff but it is all so expensive... we can afford their services and it doesn't look like their services will help our situation anyway.
Juggling Mother... Unfortunately now that it is a matter of record that he is in a relationship with an australian citizen it's gonna be kinda hard to take that route. And even thn they'd still say that he has no incentive to return there cdue to fewer jobs being available there, lower pay rate and the fact that it's a developing country... It's may be the happiest place on earth but many aspects of it are still decidedly "third world".
....Over from the other Michele's..
Hope all works great..
Both Australia and the US have had a lot of problems due to a racist past that is hard to get past. I saw the movie Barbed Wire Fence last year that portrayed the
Australian Aboriginal "solution" back in the 40s and 50s. Scary stuff especially since it was still going on in one form or another until the 70s.
I guess that when that much emphasis is placed on skin color for one population, the authorities are going to use that basis to judge everyone. Shame, huh?
This really seems terribly unfair Yaeli....! And hard to know if the "real" reason is what they say it is....! Like you, it makes me wonder how they would treat him if he lived in Australia....Disgustimg to say the least and Horrifying on the deepest level...I hope you find the way to be together at Christmas....
Here from Michele this A.M.
Hang in there, Yaeli. There is a whole big world out there for you and Ben :-)

Michele sent me
Michele sent me this time, Yaeli, and I can't find any post to comment on that I've not already been to. Am I addicted to you? LOL
It sounds like your relationship is going to be a struggle until you finish your training and Uni work, Yaeli. Fortunately I suspect you don't have far to go, timewise, and then an Island paradise--and two willing arms--await you.
You know my SIL had the hardest time getting a visa to AUS when visiting her now hubby. It took them forever to get it worked out. good luck here from Michele's tonight.
I wonder has it always been so difficult to get a Visa or is it because of all the "terrorist" problems around the world in recent years?
I ho[pe everything works out for you.
Michele sent me.
Good luck, Yaeli; hope it all works out.
That really sucks but i guess it's happenned so many times - a guy from a poorer country marries an Australian, leaves her then never goes back! But i mean doesn't the fact that you guys were considering buying land in Vila kind of outweigh that possibility? It's just weird how things work.

Get your bootie back to blogging, Yaeli. This playing hard to get is wearing me out! :-p
On this blog - my brother in law has just had a battle to get his girlfriends mother over to Australia on a tourist visa. She is from Peru and her daughter now lives here. The first time the visa was knocked back, for the same reason (no reason to return). When you are next in Sydney, have a chat to him, as his girlfriends mother is indeed here now for a long holiday (a few months) and her father and brother are coming over in March!!
